Which USS Enterprise Has The Best Bridge?

Ok- get ready everyone.  This blog entry is going to be just about as geeky as they come!  Within it I will attempt to answer the question, which USS Enterprise had the best bridge design!

A disclaimer-- I do not claim to own any of these images!  I got many of them from this great website and resource for Star Trek technology research- www.ex-astris-scientia.org.

U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 (TOS)
First, let's take a look at the original, shall we?  Matt Jefferies' design for the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise is very impressive!  Using colorful lights that contrast against the shiny black consoles and bold red accents, he made this an exciting and colorful look at the future!  In fact, this original design has been used by the US military to plan special situation rooms and control centers.  The commander has a raised center seat that swivels giving him/her an unobstructed view of all the surrounding monitors and work stations. At the front (not seen in this illustration) is the main viewer - like a big screen TV.  This was an improvement on the original concept that called for a large window in the front of the bridge.  This window idea would later be used in the JJ Abrams universe.
Verdict: A- I love this bridge!  It was the inspiration for so much... but the design has been improved upon over the years.

More after the jump...

Getting Impatient!

I've been obsessed all week about My Disney Side @Home Disney Celebration kit which is supposed to arrive sometime before the end of the month!   Each kit is supposed to be a little unique, but that hasn't kept me from obsessing over what other people have posted online about their kits!  Check out what these other hosts have posted here, here, and here!  AMAZING, RIGHT?

Now that Tim and I have finally found our new apartment, our Disney Side celebration will be a house warming party.  A few of our friends have kids, but this will be mainly an adult party.  I haven't settled on a theme yet.  At this point I'm just brainstorming.  Here are a few random thoughts from my notebook:
  • Decorating with printed out Vintage Disney Attraction Posters?
  • Encouraging our guests to wear fun geeky Disney related costumes or t-shirts. I know our friends have Star Wars,  Muppets, & Marvel shirts!
  • Giving out pins as party favors?  We have a bunch from our last pin trading experience!
  • Giving out Disney hotel soaps and shampoos guest gifts.
  • Recreating some park food like Popcorn, churros, mickey bars, Lafew’s Brew, Dole Whip
  • Have Disney music playlist running in the bathroom ipod dock
  • Have Disney movie playing in living room?
  • Vintage Mickey cartoons from a youtube playlist playing on an iPad in the kitchen?
  • Everyone gets to wear an ear hat from our collection for a fun photo op!
  • Play Disney Apples to Apples
Ohhh the possibilities!

Well, as soon as my kit arrives I'll make sure to post lots of pictures!  :)

Geek Club!

I’ve been watching a lot of Big Bang Theory lately-- in fact I’ve marathoned the whole show and now I’m caught up to the current season.  It’s such a fun show-- and very relatable!  It also makes me a little jealous.  Wouldn’t it be fun to have a “gang” of geeky friends who always have a board game night, a video game night, a comic book store night… etc.   We could even make a podcast together like Fun with Flags!  Haha!

Something else got me to thinking about forming a “gang”.  I was listening to “The Disney Hipster Podcast” the other day when I realized something.  It’s clearly just 4 close friends who get together, drink and eat and talk about a shared interest every week or so.  They happen to record it and publish it as a podcast.   It’s basically a little club!

I’m a member of a Star Trek fan club-- but it’s a correspondence chapter meaning we don’t actually meet in person we just communicate via e-mail, Facebook and the web.  While it should be fun to connect with people who also love Star Trek, I’ve found it to be a pretty empty experience.  My fellow club members live all over the country and all have such busy schedules.  We occasionally e-mail but the conversations never get too deep or interesting.  I also have a weird schedule so when they plan a “watch party” (an event where we all watch the same movie or episode and gather in a chat room to discuss) it’s usually when I’m working so I can’t do it.   We theatre folk have such strange schedules!

Anyway, I find myself fantasizing about starting my own little Star Trek fan club.  It would be small. Just a few close friends with a shared interest of Trek.  We’d gather once a month maybe- often at one of our apartments.  We’d eat together, drink and watch some Star Trek.  It could be a bit of a book club-- or comic book club too. Sometimes it would be game night and we could play “Star Trek Scene It” or “Star Trek Settlers of Catan”.  Ooo.. or we could play Klingon Boggle like they do on Big Bang Theory!  Haha!

We could also start a roleplaying campaign!  I have everything you need to play the Star Trek tabletop roleplaying game that was published a few years ago.  It’s a little different than D&D but we could get the hang of it.  We could set up a whole fictional ship and roles and titles for the purpose of the roleplay-- that would be fun!

Of course when the new JJ Abrams movie comes out in 2016 we’d go on opening day-- maybe in costume!  And then there’s conventions and comic cons… lots of outings that we could make.

So yeah.  This is all just in my imagination.  Me and my Geeky friends.  Sounds fun right? Interested?

Starting to Plan My Disney Side @Home Celebration Party!!

A couple weeks ago I filled out a survey / contest entry form to host an @Home Celebration party themed around the Show Your Disney Side campaign.  Well guess what!   Along with hundreds of others-- I WON!   Basically I've agreed to

  • Host a gathering and invite friends to attend.
  • Share my experience online via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, your personal blog, and any other available social media channels
  • Participate in a short online survey after hosting your party, and share links to your social media posts.
And for that I'll get a @Home Celebration kit, containing party favors, decorations, games, activities, recipe ideas and special host gifts!   I can't tell you how excited I am!  I think most of the other winners have children.  It was organized by a BSM Media which focuses on mothers.  It's nice to see that they didn't discriminate, however and selected some childless Disney fan bloggers to participate as well.

About the party itself-- it has to be in the last two weeks of February which is perfect for us!  We'll be moving at the first of the month and that gives us a couple weeks to get settled in before hosting the event.  I think it will be a house warming party as well. :)

I'm eagerly waiting for my kit-- but in the mean time I'm getting some great theme ideas at http://www.disneysidecelebrations.com.  :)

Star Trek Themed Thanksgiving Dinner?

Wouldn't it be fun to theme your Thanksgiving (or Friendsgiving) feast to your favorite Sci-Fi franchise?  A Star Trek themed Thanksgiving dinner is easy enough.

First off, you can serve turkey- it's canon!  In the TOS episode "Charlie X", Captain Kirk tells the ship's chef "On Earth today, it's Thanksgiving. If the crew has to eat synthetic meat loaf, I want it to look like turkey."  Later in the episode Charlie uses his powers to transform the meat loaf into real turkeys!   To make this episode part of your meal, just serve turkey with a label that says "meat loaf" but cross that our and write in "turkey".   :)

The fun doesn't stop there-- you can also invest in Ethan Phillips's Star Trek Cook Book and serve dishes like Ocampa Potato Salad & Klingon Gagh!   Which go well with Romulan Ale (any blue drink will do).

Here's a complication of Thanksgiving references I found on Youtube that might help inspire you. :)

What to Wear & Carry in WDW

In today's blog I discuss how to take care of yourself in Walt Disney World.  In order not to get over heated, dehydrated, blistered, and miserable I take extra steps to wear comfortable clothes and pack a bag of must-have items.

The Best Star Trek Podcasts (IMHO)

In this video I break down what I think are the  best Star Trek podcasts.
First up is Roddenberry endorsed & produced http://www.missionlogpodcast.com/ which takes a look at the original series one episode at a time.

Next up, I talk about the library of podcasts at http://trek.fm/.  These include some of my favorites like:

Finally, I recommend http://www.trekcast.com/ the #1 rated Star Trek Podcast!

What do you think?  Do you have a favorite podcast that deals with the world of Star Trek?

******UPDATE May 2014******
I feel I must go back and edit this blog entry with an update.  There are two new shows on the trek.fm network that are basically my new favorites.  The first is Earl Grey, dedicated entirely to Star Trek The Next Generation.  Hosts Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx take a fun casual look at the show that revitalized and helped make Star Trek the phenomenon it is today.

And then, the newest show on the network is Standard Orbit, which focuses on the original series.  While not quite a light hearted (read silly) as Earl Grey, it's a great listen for my commute to work.

So, you won't hear me talk about either of these great shows in the below talky-blog.  Bu here are their links:

Throwback Thursday Disney Style!

The internet has introduced a number of traditions.  One of these is "Throwback Thursday".  Most people celebrate this by uploaded an old photo of themselves as their Facebook profile picture.  Or some folks will tweet an old picture from their past in a "remember when" kind of way.

I'd like to take this a moment on this "Throwback Thursday" to talk about the Disneyland and Walt Disney World of yesterday and share with you several web links and blogs on the topic.

First, let's look at the Walt Disney Company's own official department dedicated to looking back thru time.  The Disney Archives and Collections Department has a great web page full of images from the company's past.  Plus, D23 The official Disney Fan Club, produces a series of videos called the Armchair Archivist.   I can get lost watching these on YouTube!  Here is an embedded video link to the whole playlist.

Then there are fan created webpages, blogs and photograhy collections all dedicated to the Disney. Here are some of my favorite:

  • Yesterland is a great website all about closed Disneyland and WDW attractions.  Ever wonder what Cranium Command was like in the Wonder of Life Pavilion at EPCOT?  Want to take a trip back in time to see the original Dumbo ride before it was replaced with the new version?  Then this is the website for you!
  • Walt Dated World is similar to Yesterland but it's not as easy to navigate.  Still, it's worth checking out all their photos of what WDW was like in the 70's and 80's.
  • Daveland's Disneyland.  Dave DeCaro is a talented artist & photographer who also has created this treasure trove of vintage & current photographs and research all about Disneyland, the Disneyland Hotel and Walt Disney World.  Trust me, you can get lost in there!
  • BoingBoing is calls itself "the web's favorite zine devoted to the weird, wonderful and wicked things to be found in technology and culture".  But, thanks is large part to Cory Doctorow, the site often covers Disney history.  :)
  • The Original EPCOT webpage is less about what was and more about what might have been.  So it almost doesn't fit on this list.  But still, it's worth checking out.
  • Imagineering Disney is my most recent discovery.  I just spent hours clicking around this blog and reading all about Disney's involvement in the 1964 World's Fair, the new closed Discover Island and River Country in WDW.  Also make sure to check out the extensive
"Friends of the Blog" list on the right side of the page for hours and hours of more entertainment.

What if Disney Owned Star Trek?

Check out my latest video blog where I ask the question "What if Star Trek was owned by the Walt Disney Company?"   It's not that hard to imagine, especially since Disney currently owns both Star Wars & Marvel.   Let's look at what they've done with those other geeky franchises.  :) Also-- I give three examples of Star Trek that you can find at Walt Disney World today. :)

My Love/Hate Relationship with the Subway

Sometimes I have trouble sleeping.  It's like I can't make my brain stop-- I can't just relax and slip into blissful slumber.  Instead I have hundreds of thoughts racing thru my mind.  Tonight I've decided to silence my mind a bit by blogging.

This evening's entry is about the subway system in my home city of  New York.  You see, even though I'm miles away working, my heart and my mind are both in the big Apple.  So maybe if I blog about NYC I'll be able to get it off of my mind and I'll fall asleep.  We'll see.

So anyway, I kind of hate the subway.  I hate it for lots of reasons like:
  • It's crowded.
  • It often makes me motion sick and/or dizzy.  This is especially true if I'm not facing forward or if I try to read.
  • The trains & stations are usually too hot or too cold.
  • It's dirty, smelly, and run down.  Many stations have pealing paint, water damaged tile, etc.
  • There are few bathrooms in the stations and most of the ones they exist are pad locked and no longer for public use.
  • "PLEASE SWIPE AGAIN"
  • Buskers, musicians, pan handlers, homeless people--- basically anyone who want's money is in my way.
  • It's full of rude people who take up more than one seat, clip their nails, litter, talk LOUDLY on their phones, etc.
  • The terrible subway "art".
On the other hand, there are reasons to like the Subway as well.  These include things like:
  • It gets me where I need to go.
  • It allows me to avoid driving in NYC traffic.
  • I can wear a Star Trek costume on my way to/from an event (like the movie premier) and no one cares. At all.
  • It gives me a chance to listen to podcasts on my iPod.
  • You can actually get in some good people watching.
  • It's better for the environment than cars!
So, in conclusion, do I like the Subway?  Not really- but its not all bad.  I am guilty of letting a bad subway experience ruin my day, however, and that's just silly.  I need to work on that.

What do you think of the subway?

Who is the Best Star Trek Captain?

It's a subject that is certainly up for debate!  As I described in a previous entry, it's hard to compare Kirk and Picard.  However, I now propose that there is a compromise....

Back to Blogger!

I've decided to separate my professional web page (www.themikejones.com) from my blog.  Basically, my web page has one goal and one goal only-- to get me a job.  It's just a place for me to put my resume, post information about current projects, and help me showcase myself as a Stage Manager who YOU want to hire!  The page is hosted on wordpress.com, which is a blogging platform.  So naturally, it was also host to my geeky pop-culture blog.  Until today, that is, when I asked myself: do I really want prospective employers to read about my visit to Star Trek The Exhibition or to watch a YouTube clip of me talking about my favorite Disney podcasts?  Not really... so thus I've decided to make my blog home here on Blogger.  It will be a lot easier to post my YouTube clips here too, since both sites fall under the Google umbrella. :)

Star Trek: The Exhibition

As I mentioned in the previous entry, one of the stops on our honeymoon was at  Star Trek: The Exhibition in Orlando Florida.

It was great!  Yes, it was small-- just as reported.  But still, the model of the USS Enterprise Bridge from the original series was breathtaking to me.  I have to report that it wasn't quite at the right scale, however.  And yes, there were some design differences like the number of steps from one level of decking to the next, and Spock's station was wrong.  But still, sitting in the Captain's chair was a dream come true for me!   I couldn't get the smile off of my face. :)  In addition to the bridge, they had a Romulan shuttle from Star Trek Nemesis, an abundance of costumes, props, and shooting ship models from all the other shows and movies in the franchise.   Everything was real show-used items unless noted otherwise-- most of it was real though.  As a theatre technician and a Trekkie, getting to see real props and costumes causes an inner struggle.  The tekkie in me wants to see how they made the props.  I was saying things like "Is that phaser just painted wood?"  But the Trekkie in me  was thinking "OMG--a real phaser!"

I'd read online that they don't allow any photography and that if they catch you taking pictures, they ask to watch you delete the pictures from your camera. But there was no mention of this from the guy who sold us our ticket.  So... we snuck a shot of me sitting in the captain's chair.  :)

Honeymoon Plans + Star Trek: The Exhibition!

Hello friends and blog buddies!   As many of you know, my summer work is coming to and end.  Fingers and Toes closes this weekend at the Merry Go Round Playhouse's Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival.  Next up on my schedule?  OUR HONEYMOON!!   My husband Tim and I got married in May but couldn't take our honeymoon right away because I had to get back to work.  But now we're packing up and go to Walt Disney World for 7 days followed by a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas on the Disney Dream and then capped off with 2 days at Universal Studios / The Wizarding World of Harry Potter  and.... a visit to Star Trek: The Exhibition!

Now, obviously Star Trek: The Exhibition is the smallest venue on the docket.  But I'm no less excited about it.  From what I've read it's a small museum exhibit at 7220 International Drive in Orlando that contains a replica of the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 from Star Trek: The Original Series, several captain's chairs and a selection of other props and costume pieces from the franchise.   I absolutely can't wait to sit in the center seat on the bridge!!  Sadly, I have read that they don't allow photography.  But if there is an option to buy a photo, I'll be sure to do it and  post whatever photos I do end up with either on here or on Facebook. :)

I've wanted to go to Star Trek: The Exhibition ever since it's original debut back in 2008 in Long Beach, CA.  Now that Exhibition was HUGE!  Since then the collection has been split into 3 different shows that can be on tour at the same time.   Most recently these were at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the St. Louis Science Center in Missouri.    We almost went to see the show in at the Kennedy Space Center last September on our last trip to Walt Disney World but it just didn't work out logistically.  It's all water under the bridge now, but I hear that it was a great exhibit and very cool to actually be at NASA.  But since that exhibit closed, the license for "Star Trek: The Exhibition" was sold by CBS Consumer Production to EMS Exhibits.  It's EMS that is hosting this smaller Orlando exhibit.

I know some people who work in the world of traveling museum exhibits like the King Tut show that was in the Times Square Discovery Center a couple years ago and the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit that was just there last year.  It's an interesting world.  They have Stage Manager type show producers who oversee all the details of the load in, set up, and running of the space.  It's almost like being a museum curator-- attention to detail is a must!   In any case, I hope that these EMS people do a good job with the license.  I REALLY hope that they bring it to New York City so I can go over and over! :)   Since the closing of Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas-- an amusement park like attraction formerly at the Las Vegas Hilton, these museum exhibits are all we trekkies have!

In related news, a brave Trekkie has rescued a replica of the Enterprise D bridge from the dumpster out in California and is trying to raise money to restore it!  He hopes that the fully restored bridge set can go on display for fans.  :)  That sounds like an amazing idea!!
